Butterfly Impressions: Portfolio Project

Butterfly Impressions, 2004, Bound Album

Every spring countless butterflies hatch along the rivers and streams that meander through New York’s Catskill Mountains. Among the most majestic are the Yellow Swallowtails that are a common sight on the banks of the Beaverkill River where they gather in spectacular clusters. Sadly, many of these carefree and graceful flyers are also swept to their untimely deaths by motor vehicles on nearby thoroughfares. For some indecipherable reason, I find it impossible to pass all of these delicate lifeless forms. Often, I stop to collect one or two and press them in books where they make for beautiful surprise encounters at times. Several of them are presented here in the form of soft ground etchings I made directly from the butterflies. At once, they remind me of their stunning natural beauty, how fragile life is, and the importance of honoring both. Butterfly Impressions was published as a limited edition of prints. Each of the images in the suite is from a unique soft ground impression. All were etched on copper plates with additional aquatint or marbling and printed in either one color, or a two-color viscosity technique. The numbered and signed edition is limited to just four. The portfolio is presented in a deluxe custom-made clamshell box covered in aqua-green raw silk. In the cover of each box is embedded one of the original copper plates from the suite. The plates have been given a beautiful patina, polished and lacquered by the artist. The entire edition was printed on a custom hand-made paper developed specifically for the project by Dieu Donne Papermill in New York City. Each sheet of paper, deckled on all four sides, bears both the paper mills’ distinctive watermark and the artist’s dragonfly blind stamp The images are 6” x 6” on paper sheets measuring approximately 12” x 12”. The boxed sets also include the separately printed artist’s statement about the project featured above.
